Concrete was originally used by the Romans over 2,000 years ago. Their immense structures still, for the most part, stand today. These are living testaments to human ingenuity and engineering. Unfortunately, the cement recipe was lost for centuries until the late 1800's. Cement, mixed with sand and stone aggregates, creates a substance, when re-enforced with steel re-bar, that exhibits very high compressive strength. We all know this substance as concrete. As strong and durable as concrete is, it is susceptible to deterioration. Water and pollution can erode the surface and corrode the steel beneath. The early Roman structures did not use steel, but are still showing signs of decay due to modern environmental impacts like pollution. Our nation's entire infrastructure is made up mostly of concrete. It has been said that next to water, concrete is the most used substance on Earth! Proper restoration and preservation of concrete is important business.
