Brick and stone masonry, with proper design, construction, and maintenance, should last for centuries. This is evident in historic buildings all over the world. There have been some changes in the materials and procedures used, such as the re-discovery of Portland cement in mortar during the late 1800's and the development of steel and concrete structure which turned masonry from a structural building material into essentially a decorative facade material, but compared to most industries very little has changed in masonry since ancient times.
